Why am I thankful?
When Hillary Clinton announced her presidency, my Mom announced the importance of supporting Hillary. For Mom, this was a woman who had struggled against all the same hurdles that she had as a woman in a men's professional world. And she had succeeded. Supporting Hillary meant supporting the long journey of women throughout the world for equality.
When Barack Obama (finally) secured the Democratic Nomination for the Presidency, I was thrilled, and at the same time struck by a slight meloncholy. I didn't want to celebrate too much, knowing that my Mom and Dad had both wanted Hillary to win... and it somehow went deeper than politics. I wanted to honor my Mom for her support of the woman who came the closest to the presidency in history (or herstory).
I also wanted to start bridging the gap and sending out a message of love and respect to the supporters of Hillary Clinton from those of us who have felt just as strong a devotion towards Barack Obama.
This is an historic election. I'm proud to have been a part of it and look forward to the change we are all ready for.
